Choghadiya (also spelled Chogadia) is a Vedic Hindu time-division system that divides each day and night into 8 periods called muhurat. Each period is ruled by a specific planet and classified as auspicious (Amrit, Shubh, Labh), neutral (Chal), or inauspicious (Udveg, Kaal, Rog). It is widely used in Gujarat and across India to determine the best time to start new work, travel, or perform ceremonies.
There are 16 Choghadiya periods in a full day — 8 during daytime (sunrise to sunset) and 8 during nighttime (sunset to next sunrise). Each period lasts approximately 90 minutes, though the exact duration varies by location and season since it is calculated from local sunrise and sunset times.
Amrit Choghadiya (ruled by Moon) is the most auspicious for starting any new work. Shubh Choghadiya (Jupiter) is excellent for ceremonies. Labh Choghadiya (Mercury) is ideal for learning and education. Chal Choghadiya (Venus) is specifically favorable for travel and journeys.
Both Choghadiya and Hora divide the day into planetary periods but differ in origin. Choghadiya divides day and night into 8 periods each (16 total) and classifies them as good or bad. Hora assigns each hour to one of the 7 classical planets in a fixed sequence, identifying the ruling planet's energy without a good/bad label.
