What is the Indian (Vedic) Luni-Solar Calendar?
Unlike the solar Gregorian calendar which only follows the Earth's orbit around the Sun, the Indian Calendar combines the cycles of both the Moon and the Sun. Each lunar month contains 30 Tithis (lunar days), divided equally into two fortnights: Shukla Paksha (bright/waxing phase from New Moon to Full Moon) and Krishna Paksha (dark/waning phase from Full Moon to New Moon).
How does Vikram Samvat Differ Between Gujarat & North India?
In Gujarat, the calendar follows the Amavasyant (Kartakadi) system where the month ends on Amavasya (New Moon) and the new Vikram Samvat year begins on Kartak Sud 1 (Bestu Varas / day after Diwali). In North India, Maharashtra, and other regions following Purnimant (Chaitradi), the lunar month ends on Purnima (Full Moon) and the new year begins on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada.
Why do Tithi Timings Vary by City and Timezone?
In Vedic astrology, a civil Panchang day is counted from one sunrise to the next. The Tithi prevailing at the exact moment of local Sunrise (Udaya Tithi) determines the ritual date for the day. Because the Sun rises at different times across different longitudes and timezones, the active Tithi may differ between cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, London, and New York.
